Cefotax is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, especially respiratory tract infections caused by bacteria, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections caused by bacteria, some bacterial gastrointestinal infections, certain types of skin and soft tissue infections.
Cefotax injections treat infections of the bones and bone marrow caused by bacteria, infections of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, bacterial blood contamination, infections of the lining of the abdominal cavity, prevention of infection before undergoing surgery, and infections of the inner layer of the heart.
