    About Erythropoietin A glycoprotein hormone produced by kidney, Colony Stimulating Factor, Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, antianemic agent. Mechanism of Action of Erythropoietin It induces erythropoiesis in a dose dependent manner by binding to specific receptors on target cell surface and alters phosphorylation of intracellular proteins. It acts on erythroid marrow stimulates proliferation of colony forming cells of the erythroid series. It induces haemoglobin formation, erythroblast maturation and releases reticulocytes in circulation. Indications for Erythropoietin 1. Anaemia associated with chronic renal failure 2. Anaemia related to cancer chemotherapy 3. Anaemia associated with Zidovudine therapy in AIDS patients Typical Dosage for Erythropoietin Dosage: I.V.: Starts with 25 to 50i.u./kg over 1 to 2 minutes- thrice weekly. Increases the dosage in increments of 25i.u./kg at intervals of four weeks based on patient`s response.
