Mechanism of Action of Vancomycin Vancomycin binds to the terminal dipeptide sequence of peptidoglycan and inhibits the association and cross linking of peptidoglycan and as the result inhibit cell wall synthesis Indications for Vancomycin 1. Endocarditis 2. Pseudomembranous enterocolitis 3. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection 4. Staphylococcal enterocolitis Interactions for Vancomycin Anion-exchange resins: Antagonism of oral vancomycin by cholestyramine. Aminoglycosides: Risk of nephrotoxicity may be increased. Anaesthetics: Erythema and histamine like flushing in children. Nondepolorizing Muscle Relaxants: The neuromuscular blockade may be enhanced.
