Protam is primarily used to reverse the effect of anticoagulants, especially heparin. This drug is usually given in emergency cases or during surgical procedures that require stopping the effect of heparin quickly to avoid uncontrolled bleeding.
Protam is used to stop the effect of heparin after surgical procedures such as open heart surgery or some catheterization procedures, to treat cases of excessive overdose of the anticoagulant heparin in order to reduce the risk of severe bleeding that may pose a threat to the patient's life, and to control bleeding resulting from an imbalance in blood clotting during or after surgical procedures.
