Diflucan is used to treat vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida yeast, a common condition among women. It is also used to treat fungal infections affecting other areas of the body, such as the mouth (oral candidiasis), throat, esophagus, and urinary tract. It can also be prescribed to treat more severe systemic infections, such as fungal meningitis, especially in people with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as HIV or after organ transplants.
Diflucan may be prescribed as part of prophylaxis for people at risk of fungal infections, such as patients undergoing chemotherapy or those taking medications that weaken the immune system.
